Alex at Brokenpress Design makes some of the most beautiful and well-crafted furniture I’ve ever seen, and the dude’s the coolest to work with.
I hired Alex in 2018 to fabricate and install three custom bathroom vanities, a floating pot-rack, a huge walnut framed mirror and a round mirror framed in oak, a few shelves, and (at the last minute!) two gorgeous walnut countertop with a sink cutout. All of these were made to highly detailed specifications for the renovation of our 1910 condo, and the designs were vastly improved by Alex’s own stylistic and construction recommendations. He not only fabricated these solid pieces, but also carefully and expertly installed all of them. It was a really complex job in many respects, not least because I was supervising the renovation from out of state and it required Alex to come out for multiple site visits. But he came through and made it easy.
Next, I’m going to hire Brokenpress to make us a 12’ dining room table. I can’t wait to work with him again.

There's only one place to go in Chicago for super high-quality, totally badass custom mid-century modern furniture. Alex designed and made me a stereo / vinyl storage credenza. He customized the piece to the size of my stereo and my vinyl collection. His work is SO beautifully built.
I liked Brokenpress's work and care so much that i asked Alex to design a second credenza with center storage drawers, since I had fewer components.

We had a fantastic experience with Brokenpress. We had a unique corner in our house that we couldn't find the right piece of furniture for. It had to be many things - store records (but ideally concealed) fit an oversize amp, hide our cable box and be a great spot for a record player. After searching for months we found Brokenpress and they designed and fabricated the perfect piece that fit seamlessly into our decor. The bonus is the cord management, that is easy to access and keeps the area looking clean. The process was great that during it we asked them to make us an additional tower for record storage that fits perfectly into another corner in our house. Fabulous experience overall!

Alex is passionate about his work and craft and very client-oriented. My wife and I needed nightstands for our bedroom, and because of the master bedroom layout, required them in two different sizes that aren't always available from stores. Just as critical, we had our own ideas about the right design in terms of the position of a drawer and open slots for books, etc., which was also hard to find. And we are very picky about design and quality, as we're living in a home we designed and built.
We found Alex online and were immediately drawn to the style of his pieces and so gave him a call. He was very helpful on his initial visit and subsequent contacts as we worked through the design and other details. Alex is quite willing to work with your suggestions and then tweak and improve them, which we appreciated. It's obvious that his interest was in crafting a piece that would truly meet our needs and fit in our space and be well made. He even loaned us a special color chart (from his lovely wife, Jen), to help us get the color of the drawer face right.
The finished pieces are everything we had hoped for and look perfect in the bedroom. And considering the quality and the fact that you can get just what you want, Alex's work isn't that expensive. If you can't find what you need at the usual sources, and you value style and craftsmanship, contact Alex. You won't be disappointed.

Excellent craftsmanship. We’ve had Brokenpress design quite a few pieces (dining bench, audio credenza, walnut mantlepiece, built in shelves) and not only do they look fantastic, Alex’s input and tweaks helped really make the pieces perfect. Each project has been made better by his knowledge and experience.If you’re into audio gear or a vinyl collector, you know how much a pain it is to find something to hold you collection that didn’t come flat packed from Sweden (not that there’s anything wrong with that,) but at a certain point, you want to have it made just how you like, right? At least, I did. And that’s what got us started. My audio credenza holds my stereo, and roughly 300 LPs while looking beautiful and one of a kind. And , it won’t need to be replaced anytime soon.Every time we have people over, they always ohh & ahh over all the pieces that we are lucky enough to have. We had Alex design and build a set of built in bookshelves spanning an entire wall of our living room. During the design process, he listened to our needs and created several designs that gave us everything that we wanted.
The finished product was even better than we could have expected. Alex's attention to detail really shows. Not only is everything beautifully crafted, he also spent the time necessary to make sure that everything fit perfectly (which isn't easy in an older Chicago house). I recently had a media credenza built for my stereo equipment. I had shopped around for a few months but could never find a piece that I liked that suited my needs. Finally I decided to have one custom built and I went with Brokenpress Design. Brokenpress came to my house to take measurements, to ask me how I was going to use the piece, how much cord management I needed, what finish I wanted, etc. A few weeks later, the finished piece was delivered…and it’s perfect. The build quality is top notch and it is just beautiful! Now my hi-fi gear has a proper home and my living room has a great focal point. I’m one very happy customer!

Alex did the fabrication and installation of a series of custom bookshelves for my home, and a custom live edge wall / storage unit. The work is the centerpiece of the second floor addition to my home, and it was executed with the highest level of care and workmanship. The tung oil finish on the wood is as beautiful today as the day it was installed (4 years ago). I would very happily call upon Alex for any and all future custom furniture!!
(In a prior life, he was also the lead carpenter on the addition to my home. The work was nothing short of amazing, and I'm pleased to be able to live in such a beautifully finished home. The quality and beauty of the work continues to surprise and impress visitors. I love it!!)

Alex's furniture is beautiful and there's nothing out there like it. Much of it is made in a mid-century modern style, but his pieces are often more secure and solid than something picked up at a vintage market.
I first wrote Alex when I had a rather unusual request. I have a pair of Klipsch La Scala speakers that were missing the grills (the cloth part that covers the speakers) and I was struggling to find an extra pair on the internet. I went to Alex having heard good things via word of mouth and he got back to me instantly. In less than a week, he had come over to my apartment, measured the speakers, helped me pick out the wood, and completed them. I came and picked them up and they fit perfectly--better than factory made! I found a pair of badges and put them on, and they are quite handsome!
His prices were reasonable considering the custom job, and he was extremely affable.
When I came to pick them up, Alex took me through some of his other furniture that he had either made by hand or restored. It was absolutely gorgeous.
I have recently become a bit of an audio geek, collecting records and the like. If you're the type of person that needs storage, but wants to keep it beautiful, I highly recommend you shoot Alex an e-mail. He'll work with your needs and design you something really beautiful in your price point. I know that once I come into some cash, I'll be giving him a call again. Great craftsmanship.
